A Classic Returns with New Wings
Our Summer Gaming Special begins with the return of one of Nintendo's most beloved space shooters. Star Fox makes its debut on Nintendo Switch 2 with a polished remake that honours the original while introducing enough modern touches to tempt returning pilots back into the cockpit.
Visually, the game is undeniably sharper than its predecessor. Higher-resolution textures, richer colours and smoother performance breathe new life into the familiar worlds of the Lylat System. Nintendo has also expanded the experience with additional missions, a remastered soundtrack and more extensive ship customisation, giving veteran players new reasons to revisit this classic adventure.
Our first impressions, however, were somewhat mixed. While the graphical improvements are noticeable, they do not fully showcase the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2. Whether played on a television in docked mode or as a handheld console, the presentation is clean and polished, but we expected a more substantial visual leap from Nintendo's latest hardware.
One design decision that may divide players is the mandatory tutorial. Although useful for newcomers, experienced fans would likely appreciate the option to skip the introductory training and head straight into the action.
Fortunately, these early reservations soon fade. Once the adventure truly begins, Star Fox recaptures the fast-paced arcade gameplay that made the series such a favourite. The responsive controls feel perfectly suited to the Switch 2, aerial combat remains exhilarating, and the new content integrates naturally with the familiar campaign.
Having spent countless hours with Star Fox 64 on the Nintendo 64 and later enjoying the series on the Wii U, I found myself pleasantly surprised by how comfortably this remake balances nostalgia with modern refinements. Rather than replacing what made the original memorable, it enhances the experience without losing its identity.
Whether you are a long-time fan eager to relive Fox McCloud's adventures or a newcomer discovering the series for the first time, Star Fox is well worth considering. It is an ideal companion for the summer holidays—easy to pick up for a quick mission by the pool or at the beach, yet engaging enough to keep players coming back for one more flight.
Verdict: While the visual overhaul could have been more ambitious, Star Fox successfully reminds us why Nintendo's space-faring fox remains one of the company's most enduring heroes. It is a confident remake that respects its legacy while offering just enough new content to make the journey worthwhile.
